A typical 44-hour work week means that it is hard-pressed to find time to do anything these days, particularly the need to keep fit and healthy. You know those gym rat friends of yours? What about those who try for the latest ketogenic and paleo diets, those who are constantly over-enthusiastic about these trends? All in all, they probably sacrifice a large part of their lunch breaks doing squats at the office. Anyhow, don't let your work environment diminish the need to stay fit!
Be on the move
Break up your work day by getting up, stretching and moving. Moving regularly throughout the day will keep your mind and body limber and help avoid fatigue. Some of the ways you can achieve this are by getting out of your chair more, standing during phone conversations, and if you need to drive to work, try parking your car at the far end of the lot and taking the stairs. In addition, employers should persuade employees to bring healthy lunches to work, or to engage in healthier choices when they purchase food and drinks in the staff canteen - for the larger multinational corporations.
Take personal responsibility for workplace health
Employees should also play their part when it comes to staying healthy in the workplace. For instance, they can make sure that they wash their hands more frequently, keep their workspace clean and neat, keep hand sanitisers and sprays at the desk and wipe surfaces often. Drinking more water keeps one hydrated and helps with clearer thinking, avoid getting into contact with other contagious persons and try to get out into the sun during breaks.
Make better choices
Of course, limiting caffeine intake and reducing the amount of salt and sugar in your diet will help to reduce that food-induced sleepiness and fatigue. Don't forget that eight waking hours of your day is spent doing your job, so it makes sense to commit to wiser and healthier decisions.
Overall, workplace health is a responsibility that should stem from both an employer and an employee, so it is imperative that it starts now! The reason why workplace health is so important cannot be overemphasised. It is something that plays a key role in the productivity of the organisation and has to start from the wellbeing of the employees.
