Time Management
No matter how we look at it, we are each only given 24 hours in a day. Time is a finite resource, and it is up to us to make the most out of it. While is it impossible to lengthen the hours in our day, managing our time well can free time for us to do other things from which we derive great joy. It is a skill that isn't just for entrepreneurs and corporate types, everyone could benefit from managing their time more effectively and appreciating it for what it is.
Set clear goals
By attaching priority to goals that are of utmost importance, time is managed more effectively. Having clear goals means that you know which task should be tackled first. It also helps you when you plan out the order in which you do your tasks. Juggling work needs means extra caution, being organised, diligent and mindful. This is because when one fails to manage time, his or her work becomes a nuisance, relationships become distraught and productivity declines.
Organise your day
A day can typically be organised into four quadrants: crises and emergencies which are urgent and important, long-term goals which are important but not urgent, interruptions that are not important but urgent and distractions which are neither important nor urgent. Using a daily planner helps you to keep on top of the game, reminding you of important things or events which you need to get accomplished.
End indecisiveness
Deciding what you should do next on your to-do list can be majorly time consuming. Instead of staring blankly at your to-do list wondering what you should tackle, come up with a strategy or routine on how to do it. Many times during the day we struggle with indecisiveness and it has a profound impact on our productivity. Ending indecisiveness also means you learn to say no and to not take on more than you can handle. This is crucial for your wellbeing. Sometimes you just need to turn off your phone, or to minimise distractions, put your phone on mute and continue to focus on your task. Otherwise, your work day drags on and you feel that you can barely breathe with the amount of work you have to do.
Use computers or technology-assisted tools
Technology has progressed to such a large extent that it has become easy for us to note down reminders, tips and other notes on our computers and phones. Making a list, creating events with specific locations and dates, appointment reminders is the top tool for knowing when you are supposed to be doing what, where and with whom.
Why is time management so important?
At the end of it all, time management is so important because it makes us boost our confidence, allowing ourselves to take care of ourselves with the precious time and attention we have. Before even setting foot into your workplace, you will look and feel more put together. In addition, meeting your own deadlines and exceeding your expectations will help you achieve more, do the things you love and avoid feeling overwhelmed. In any given day, you might be tasked with creating something for a project, taking your child to practice, buying groceries and leading a discussion at work. All of these things take equal importance and may cause you to feel overwhelmed.
Good time management allows you to look at your to-do list, to examine priorities and to categorise everything that's expected of you. It becomes easier for you to see distinctions between work-related and personal tasks.
