Stress Management

Helping yourself destress

Two simple words that mean so much more than just that.  On a day-to-day basis, everyone faces undue and insurmountable stress. This is why it is so important to look for ways to manage it. According to WebMd, stress management is essentially about learning how to manage and cope with stress so as to lead happier and healthier lives. The next time you are about to burst from anger, think about the following five things you can do:

Maintain a positive attitude towards circumstances in your life
Life is hard. Everyone has a different struggle. As impossible as it is when facing a tumultuous relationship with a coworker, friend or work situation, it is helpful to think about the blessings you already have, the support network you already have and the blessings in your life. This will go a long way in helping you maintain a sense of self-worth and happiness.

Don't keep it all in by talking it out with friends and family
When you are severely repressed, you face the chance of being bottled up with negative emotions and not expressing yourself in a healthy manner. Personally, whenever I feel my own stress levels on the rise, I pause and imagine different ways of dispelling this. One of the best ways I can do this is by maintaining regular levels of communication with my loved ones. Simply by telling them about your problems helps you deal better with things.

Keep a stress ball at your side
Another way to minimise stress is to use a stress ball and to grip it tightly around my hands in order to evoke immediate sensations of pain. A cute reminder of what to do when times get tough, giving the stress ball a quick squeeze helps you stay in the present, and regaining mindfulness to enjoy the present is one method of reducing undue stress.

Go with the flow
Your work day doesn't go as planned, the business presentation you were supposed to have turns out to be a disaster, your parents are breathing down your neck, your partner has been acting out recently, and your children are giving you constant migraines. Sometimes it is really easy to believe that by planning everything carefully in advance, everything will work out the way you want it to. But life seldom happens this way. Allowing yourself to let go and going with the flow gives you breathing space and lessens the amount of stress you feel.

Take time for hobbies
Whether this is singing, reading, drawing or the arts, taking time out to hone your hobbies ensures a good balance between your career and your personal life. Set aside at least half an hour every day to practise doing one thing you enjoy, outside of work. This will mean that you are not constantly facing pressure and help you relax for just a while.Research has shown that adequate stress management is the ultimate factor determining how good your mental health will be. A healthy response to stress can improve function, motivation and productivity. It can help you gain a new perspective on your life and even incentivise you to become a more well-rounded person.

Lastly, when you know how to say no when you are close to reaching your limit and trim down your to-do list, dropping unnecessary things and avoiding people who cause you more stress - you are on your way to managing your stress effectively!
